Demodex are tiny mites that live on the skin, including the eyelids/lashes. They may not cause symptoms for most people, but an overgrowth can impact the meibomian glands, which are oil-producing glands in the eyelids. An overgrowth of Demodex may lead to blockages in these glands, causing issues like blepharitis or meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). These conditions are major contributors to dry eyes and other ocular discomfort. Proper eyelid hygiene, including management of Demodex, is crucial in addressing such gland-related concerns. Around 70-80% of adults may have Demodex mites.
Symptoms may include:
- Itching
- Redness
- Burning
- Irritation
- dry eyes
- Tearing
- Flakes on your eyelashes
- Foreign body sensation
- Intermittent blurred vision
- Light sensitivity
- Loss of eyelashes
- Eye or eyelid infections
In mild cases maintaining good eyelid hygiene, using tea tree oil-based products may help reduce mite populations.
For moderate to severe demodex infestations our doctors may prescribe medications. They may include topical or oral treatments such as an antibiotic or anti-parasitic treatment along with a daily cleansing routine. A corticosteroid may help to reduce the redness caused by the inflammation.
In office procedures may be recommended.
- Eyelid exfoliation: Deep cleaning of the lids and lashes removing demodex.
- Intense Pulse Light (IPL): Decreases inflammation and bacterial load and reduces the demodex population therefore improving dry eye symptoms.
- Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT): Reduces the population of demodex and heats up the meibomian glands for better quality tears.
