Conquering Seasonal Dry Eye

Seasonal dry eye, a prevalent condition, can disrupt daily life, especially during shifts in weather and environmental conditions. It often leads to discomfort, blurred vision, and can even affect the performance of contact lenses. At Monarch Bay Optometry, we’re dedicated to helping you navigate through this discomfort and regain optimal eye health.

The meibomian glands, nestled within the eyelids, are responsible for producing the essential oils that help maintain the integrity of the tear film. Seasonal dryness can lead to the dysfunction of these glands, causing a reduction in the quality and quantity of tears. This can result in symptoms like itching, burning, and gritty sensations.

Seasonal dry eye can have a significant impact on vision quality. Blurred or fluctuating vision can be particularly problematic, especially for those that have seasonal allergies and suffer from dry eye syndrome, your misery is twofold because your symptoms only exacerbate themselves.

Contact lens wearers are particularly susceptible to the effects of seasonal dryness. Reduced tear production and compromised tear quality can lead to discomfort and blurred vision. In severe cases, it may even necessitate the temporary cessation of contact lens use.

A comprehensive eye exam is crucial in diagnosing seasonal dry eye. Our optometrists utilize advanced diagnostic tools to assess meibomian gland function, tear film composition, and overall ocular surface health. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatment options may include:

  1. Rewetting drops, also known as artificial tears, are a gentle, soothing solution designed to mimic the natural composition of tears. They provide instant relief by replenishing moisture to the ocular surface.

  2. Prescription eye drops can help restore moisture by reducing inflammation or increase the eyes' natural tear production. In some cases topical antihistamines are effective.

  3. In office procedures such as Meibomian Gland Expression, Lid Exfoliation, IPL and Low Light Level Therapy can unclog and improve the function of the meibomian glands and create healthier tear film.

  4. Lifestyle Modifications such as smoking cessation. Simple adjustments, such as staying hydrated, using a humidifier, avoiding direct airflow, wearing sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from winds and glare can significantly improve symptoms.

  5. Contact lens considerations. We offer guidance on lens materials, modalities and care routines to ensure comfort for contact lens wearers.

With a targeted approach to diagnosis and treatment, we can help you navigate through the challenges of seasonal dry eye. At Monarch Bay Optometry, we’re committed to providing you with the knowledge and resources to enjoy optimal eye health year-round.
