What is Blue Light?

Blue Light is not a “new” topic. As research shows there are two types of Blue Light. Your everyday natural Blue Light (lower energy wavelengths) comes from the sun. This natural light makes our body feel awake, alert, and energetic. With technology advancements, artificial Blue Light (high energy wavelengths) was introduced in the form of laptops, computers, smartphones, gaming systems, and television. Because High Energy Blue Light (HEBL) scatters more it doesn't focus easily. This can lead to eyestrain and fatigue.

Have you heard of blue light filtering lenses? With this technology-driven lifestyle, we find our HEBL exposure on the rise. The average person is now spending about 4.3 hours or more behind a screen. That is over 50% if you are getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night! So much screen time causes our eyes to work harder, become fatigued and experience increased headaches and dry eyes. These symptoms are enhanced by being too close to the screen and not taking enough breaks.

Tip: 20/20/20 Rule says after spending 20 minutes on the computer, a person should spend 20 seconds looking at an object 20 feet away.

How do you help reduce HEBL exposure? That is where Blue Light lenses/glasses come into play. We are now able to add a Blue Light filter and an Anti-Reflective coating to prescription lenses. This reduces scatter too! We also have planned (no prescription) glasses with a Blue Light Filter for those who wear contact lenses, have had LASIK, or do not need prescription glasses. Stop by our office to try some on and get your Blue Light filter lenses!
